Swallow (2019)

Swallow could have been a bad horror movie filled with grotesque scenes about the pica disorder. Fortunately, it was a film about self-discovery and healing. There were a couple of intense scenes about the objects that the main character Hunter swallowed, but throughout the movie the main focus was mostly on her emotional state and trauma. As the sharp objects run through her digestive system and hurt her body, on the outside she looks normal. Similarly, after the discovery of her disorder by her spouse and in-laws, she brushes off as if it is nothing. We later learn more about Hunter’s past, and the movie allows us to follow her journey to track down the origin of that hunger and longing. Haley Bennet’s portrayal of Hunter was phenomenal not because of a few physically threatening scenes but because of her ability to show the stormy emotional state of Hunter under the seemingly plain, indifferent, even happy face. Finally, I really appreciated that the movie thoroughly embraced the many meanings of the word, swallow: tolerance, nourishment, pain, and healing.
