If there’s one thing that is different about this one compared to other serial killer movies, it’s that the female victims are ignored and neglected by the police. Nobody tries hard enough to catch the killer even though he is not careful. The main emotional thread of the movie lies here. The general and widespread misogyny in Iranian society especially towards sex workers is the main tragedy.
Later in the movie, the focus is on the son of the killer, who is a mere young boy. But he soon learns the ideology of his father and other (conservative) men, who think the killer is rather a martyr who is establishing order in the society. The murders were committed almost 20 years ago and the movie came out recently. And yet the fact that the movie follows this boy would mean things have not change much sadly.
