I always think it’s essential or better to understand artist’s intention to appreciate their art. The documentary provided an ample amount of information and history about Robert Irwin, but ironically his art was about telling us that we don’t have to know art history to feel something from art.
In this sense, it was interesting to learn that he refused his art to be photographed and he made many ephemeral art pieces, which forced people to be physically present to see his art and feel something on site. He helped people appreciate every moment of their lives when they were with his art. As we live in the world where we first draw our phones and cameras even before we enjoy anything directly with our naked eyes, his art and philosophy is more relevant and special than ever.
